Chuck Brown, “The Godfather of Go-Go,” Dies at 75:

Washington D.C. has last lost one of its biggest musical heroes and pioneers.  Chuck Brown, pioneer of DC favorite Go-Go music, passed away due to complications from pneumonia yesterday.  At age 75, the singer and guitarist was still exciting crowds with his brand of percussion driven live-funk called Go-Go, which he helped create in the 60s.  The singer will be missed for his energetic shows and lively persona, as well as the influence he left on hip hop and dance music as a sample source,  and his activity in the DC community.  Rest in Peace, Godfather of Go-Go.  Let us know what you think of Chuck Brown @DubJ, @CollegeDJ, and LIKE and comment this post on Facebook.

Queen of Disco Donna Summer Dies At Age 63:

Donna Summer, affectionately known as the “Queen of Disco” has passed away, TMZ reports.  Ms. Summer, who was 63, passed from complications from cancer. The five-time Grammy winner made her mark on music and culture by pioneering in the genre of disco during the 70′s, penning hits  “Love to Love You“, “She Works Hard For the Money“, and “Bad Girls” among countless others.  Her music would influence artists in genres as diverse as hip hop, techno, pop, and r&b, and her legacy will live on.  Rest in Peace Ms. Summers.  Let us know how you feel about the Queen of Disco @DubJ, @CollegeDJ, and LIKE and comment this post on Facebook.

The latest music video from Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded pits a hip hop legend against a pop superstar in a battle for a most coveted prize: the affection of the voluptuous Nicki Minaj. Although Chris Brown is Nicki’s collaborator on her latest hit “Right By My Side“, he has to compete with Nas for Nicki’s attention. Tenacious D’s album is better than pretty much every other recently released album (according to them)

But they’re not getting credit.

This is why I love The D. Don’t take that out of context. In a recent interview, the band made some pretty ballsy claims, including saying the album was better than new releases by Jack White, The Foo Fighters, and Gotye.

“I do love Jack White‘s Blunderbuss, I love the Foo Fighters, I love Tom Waits, his new record is incredible, and Gotye. But our album is better than all of those, and because we’re clowns, we don’t get that kind of love. In a 100 years’ time, no one will remember Gotye or the rest, but the shining beacon of The D, they’re going to start religions after us.”

Jack Black does make a good point- sometimes comedy acts get overlooked, regardless of their talent, as novelty, and very few get judged on the same level as acts like, well, Jack White and The Foo Fighters. Maybe that should change.

The classic emo haircut has been linked to Lazy Eye Syndrome (by a doctor whose claim has since been refuted)

Kinda makes sense, when you think about it…

Right? ‘Cause you’d only be looking out of one eye half the time. Anyway.

Doctor Andrew Hogan, an optometrist, has said that heavy fringe haircuts can lead to lazy eye syndrome. “If a young emo chap has a fringe covering one eye all the time, that eye won’t see a lot of detail. And if it happens from a young age, that eye can become amblyotic.” However, to the dismay of all of the emo-haters out there, it seems as though this story is fiction, having been thoroughly debunked on MSNBC.

Chuck Brown, the “Godfather of Go-Go” Passes Away

The legendary Chuck Brown passed away today at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore after a stay that began on April 18th.  He had been hospitalized with pneumonia and postponed numerous shows recently due to health issues.

“Go-go is D.C.’s very own unique contribution to the world of pop music, and Chuck Brown was regarded as Go-go’s creator and, arguably, its most legendary artist,” D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said in a statement. “Today is a very sad day for music lovers the world over, but especially in the District of Columbia. Without Chuck Brown, the world – and our city – will be a different place. What a loss.”

Brown’s 1970′s hit, “Bustin Loose” was a #1 hit on the MCA charts and later was sampled on Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” to win the rapper a Grammy.  Rest in peace…thoughts to Brown’s family, friends and all who love his music. Tweet @CollegeDJ

From the stage to the court!  Watch 2 Chainz, J. Nick Cannon Drops a Music Video for “Die Young”

Check out this dope new video that Nick Cannon put out for “Die Young”, the first single off his forthcoming album, due out later this year.  He stands up for what’s right here, championing for teens who are bullied because of their looks or sexual orientation.  This is a deeply emotional and beautiful visual representing a very real issue.  As he stands shirtless and cries as he is stoned against a wall, he makes his point very clear.
