Spotlight on: Captain Wilberforce
Meet the new face of Brit-pop.
Over in Great Britain, the meaning of the word ‘pop’ is very different. There, it still refers to the kind of music the Beatles played: a sort of not-so-heavy rock that is marked by catchy melodies, tight harmonies, and solid songwriting. Which is why it’s weird for us in the States to classify a band like Captain Wilberforce as ‘pop’. They’re certainly no neo-dance autotune jockeys, and you won’t find them on any top 40 stations anytime soon.
That said, there is a lot of evidence of old-school British pop sensibilities in the songs of Captain Wilberforce. Influences from Paul McCartney are evident, as are influences from Oasis and other Brit-rockers of the nineties. This is a band that knows their history. Better yet, they’re not afraid to translate and funnel those influences through their own sensibilities, creating some very creative and, honestly, stunning tracks.
